[Letter] 1856 Oct 24, Richmond to [John Albert Broadus] / B. Manly. 1856.

Writes concerning a perspective teacher: "Miss Bailey could not be highly commended as to attainments in French or music. She knows something of both--enough to give minimal instruction but not enough to carry a pupil far. Still she knows as much as many who make great pretensions and who succeed. In English branches I take her to be quite good. Her general intelligence and ability to do what she undertakes would make me expect her to succeed as a teacher."
